Child Health: 7 Signs Your Child Needs a Pediatrician
Your child has been coughing for three days, temperature is 37.5 — call the doctor or wait? A rash appeared after dinner — allergy or something serious? The line between “it will pass” and “get to a doctor now” is not always obvious. Pediatricians at S-Clinic in Chernivtsi highlight 7 symptoms that should never be ignored.
1. High Fever That Won’t Go Down
A temperature above 39°C in children over 3 months that does not respond to antipyretics within 30 to 40 minutes requires a doctor’s examination. In infants under 3 months, any temperature rise above 38°C is a reason for immediate medical attention.
2. Refusal to Eat or Drink
If a child refuses to drink fluids for more than 6 to 8 hours, or if an infant has fewer wet diapers, this indicates dehydration. Dehydration in children develops quickly and can be dangerous.
3. Rash That Doesn’t Fade Under Pressure
A fine pinpoint rash (petechiae) that does not fade when a glass is pressed against the skin may indicate serious conditions and requires urgent consultation.
4. Difficulty Breathing
Intercostal retractions, nasal flaring, wheezing, and shortness of breath are alarming signs, especially in young children.
5–7. Other Warning Signs
Severe abdominal pain, frequent illnesses (more than 8 to 10 times per year), and developmental delays are all reasons to consult a pediatrician. Regular preventive checkups help detect problems early. S-Clinic pediatricians recommend visiting at least once a year, and monthly for children under 1 year.
